Sometimes people wonder what do they do to prepare themselves? What are they saying to themselves?
I mean, you know what you’re saying to yourself. But what are they saying?
With anybody I have ever worked with that’s done something great, they do have a dialog with themselves going. And as they prepare, here is what it sounds like…here are the top five things that I hear when people prepare to do something great.
- Is there something wrong with me? Am I crazy? I can’t get anybody else to see what I am seeing.
- I am not having fun anymore.
- What’s it going to take for them to see what I am capable of? I have a lot more game in me.
- When am I going to get out of tactics, so that I can actually get to the important work?
- I keep tripping myself up. I seem to be my own worst enemy.
Okay, maybe not what you expected, right? But, it may be familiar to be at that point where your passion is equaled only by your level of frustration.
But a lot of people wonder is there something wrong with that? I am here to tell you NO! There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. It means you are normal.
But let me give you a little bit of background to explain why I say that. First of all, being frustrated means you are in the game. That’s basically what it means. You are in the game, because if you weren’t in the game it would be different. Let’s just imagine that you have this Zone of Capability. It is like a circle that contains all of the things you are capable of doing and you know you are capable of doing.
Then outside that circle are the things that don’t think you can do or you can’t do.
So, when you are feeling frustration, frustration is the emotion that tells you that you are actually in the zone of your capability. Because the emotion of frustration means that you know you can do something, but it is not happening or you are not being successful. That is what frustration is.
If you weren’t in the zone of your capability you wouldn’t be feeling frustration. What you would be feeling would be something like resignation or defeat, or you would be depressed. So the fact that you are feeling frustrated means that you are in the game.
The second thing to know about frustration is to think of it kind of like that game you use to play when you were young, when somebody would hide something and then they would help you find it by saying, “You’re getting warmer, You’re getting warmer. No, colder. Warmer. Warmer. Now hot! Hot! Hot!” Right?
So when you feel frustration it’s like your emotions are telling you, “Hot, hot, hot” It’s like your own internal indicator that says, “I’m getting close.”
Now of course you can’t stay there, but I just need you to understand a lot of people take that and think, “Okay, I should give up. I’m too frustrated.”
Frustration is just the entry card. It’s what you get when you say, “I’m going to stretch and doing something big.” But then you do have to turn the frustration into fuel and let that fuel create a fire for you.
And, where you need to get to is what I call the TIPping point—its an acronym. It stands for Turning Into an Impact Player. When you turn into an Impact Player, your inner dialog does change. The world doesn’t change. The situation around you is still the same, but your dialog will change.
You will start to say something like this. You will say, “Screw it. I’m done worrying about recognition or getting credit for this or getting a promotion. I am not going to wait for permission anymore. I’m going to do what I know is right for the business, and I’m going to rock these freakin’ results.”
It is a very different conversation. It is sort of a combination of taking charge and surrender.
A lot of people think surrender a bad thing. No. Surrendering when you have no control is actually a really smart thing. So you surrender control over whether you get credit, whether you get promoted, whether people like you or not, all that stuff goes out the window and you focus on the things, you take charge of the things you are in charge of—which is you. You are in charge of you and you can manage how you feel about it. So that is what you take charge of. Take charge and surrender.
So, I want to create a bigger picture for some of you to think of this, because if you are feeling frustrated right now, you might be thinking, “maybe I should quit.” And, maybe sometimes you should quit, because you can sink too many resources into something.
But what I find is most people who are frustrated are so close to making that TIP if they only know how to do it.
Reinterpret that frustration and understand it’s not a problem, it means you are on the threshold of something great. It means you are in the zone. You are playing the game. And then, use that frustration as fuel to move yourself forward, because the frustration can move you forward instead of it working against you and thinking “Oh my god, I’m so defeated.” Take the frustration and let it move you forward.
I hope this helps you as you think about how you are going to play your best game as you move forward. And now, this video is going two different directions and I am going to invite you to do whichever is better for you.

A game that is bigger than you have played before and you might already be frustrated. You might be worried about how you are actually going to stretch yourself into that. I will give you tools and habits that you can carry forward and practice on a daily basis to help yourself—to play the best Mind Game like the best of Impact Players.
The second game that I will help you play better is the Energy Game. This matters. You know having an impact is not easy. You know that, but think of it like in sports the last quarter of the last period, the last set, the difference between who wins and and who loses is often who has managed their energy the best. Who has the most energy at the end—who can keep going? So if that is a concern for you, I am going to show you how you can manage your energy better so that you end the game with as much energy as you started with or maybe even more. You can actually do that if you know what you are doing. So I am going to help you play the Energy Game better to make you the best Impact Player you can be.
The third game that you need to play better than everyone else, and this is one that a lot of people ask me about, is the People Game. If you are going to have a great impact you are not going to be able to do it alone. You need a lot of people. It might be a few people or tens of thousands of people, sometimes.
So how do you get those people to engage with you when already the laws of statistics are against you. Think of the distribution on Bell Curve.
When you introduce a new idea, 60-70% of the people who hear it for the first time, are either going to be actively resistant to it or they are going to be confused or on the fence, and they are not going to engage with you. So how do you get those people to come forward and to actually help you make that happen?
And, if it is a radical idea, you know it will be more like 80-90% of those people will be fighting you or on the fence. So how do you bring those people along, what I call “engage and uplift” them so they are engaged and they actually take it on as their own idea. Then you are not even necessary. They take it on their own and they carry it forward. That is what you need to be able to do. That is what Impact Players do better than everyone. I will show you how to do that in this program.
The fourth of the seven games that I will talk about today is the Ground Game. The Ground Game is essentially putting things into action. Executing. You can have all the greatest ideas. You can impress everybody with your beautiful eloquence, but unless you produce results it doesn’t matter. That’s why you get called an Impact Player. So you need to be able to play the Ground Game.
But here is what we know. You are going to make a plan and you are going to start to execute your plan. But things will not go according to plan. e.g., Interest rates go up or down. Your competition makes a move you hadn’t expected. Your budget gets cut. Your best player leaves your team.
Things are going to change that you didn’t plan for and you and all those people that you need to bring with you need be able to play a Ground Game so that ground game keeps moving. You need to be resilient, so that you can keep playing well. And so, I will show you how to play the best Ground Game.
The three other games I’m not going to talk about now just for the sake of time, but there are seven games as I said that Impact Players play better than everyone else.
Here is the other thing I want you to know about this program because it is unique. This program is an immersion program. What I mean by that is that we’re going to lock out the rest of the world for two days and help you focus on just this—on just you and what you are doing. In a lot of trainings, you are checking your emails, you are checking your voicemails, you are IMing people back and forth. You are kind of there, but you’re kind of not there.
