He didn’t know any better, and he paid for it.

Cooper (aka, Coop) is a strapping 16 year-old kid who just didn’t know any better.

His ONE DREAM is to play college basketball. Okay, in full disclosure, he also seems to dream about Mexican food pretty often.

He knew the first step to his big dream was to play high school basketball. And he wanted to be ready.

He logged thousands of hours of practice and play through 8th grade. Thousands.…[Continue Reading]

He wins championships by picking losers

resilience

The Chicago Cubs’ success carries great news for you. What can you gain? More wins and a larger fan base.

But it might appear too risky. You decide.

The Cubs haven’t won a World Series since 1908. This year, they’re the favorites to win it all.

Full disclosure: I’m a lifelong Cubs fan, but this post is written for you, even if you don’t like the Cubs or baseball…[Continue Reading]

Scott Mann TEDx

Could you boil your best life’s insights into 18 minutes? That’s what you’re expected to do in a TED talk.

Lt. Colonel Scott Mann, Green Beret (retired), is one of the most impressive human beings I’ve met. An amazing leader and teacher in combat and civilian life.

Scott just condensed some of his hard earned lessons into a TEDx talk. I think you’ll want to put them into action.…[Continue Reading]

Success stories worth emulating—the rose bush and the Rolling Stones.

April 18, 2016 by David Martin 2 Comments

Part 1: When we moved into our current home, we inherited a yard that had 17 separate flowerbeds.
Out of desire and necessity, Brenda (my beloved) became an avid gardener overnight.

The gardens included many old rose bushes and Brenda became smitten with roses. Because the previous owner had neglected them, she quickly became a rose nurse, reviving a number of struggling rose bushes.

One such rose bush stood along the stone walk that led to our front door. Brenda’s care kept it from dying though it never produced a single rose bloom for our first four summers here.…[Continue Reading]

5 Things You Must Have If You’re the Underdog In the Fight

February 16, 2016 by David Martin Leave a Comment

underdog success

Last Friday was Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. He would have been 207. He still inspires us, today.

Perhaps we should rename Presidents Day to “Underdogs Day.”

Heroes we celebrate today were almost always underestimated for large stretches of their lives. They were underdogs.

This year when people are predicting your failure, remember the underdog. Even the last three US presidents elected were laughable underdogs early in their campaigns.…[Continue Reading]

What are you willing to do when no one is watching?

January 25, 2016 by David Martin 4 Comments

strategic choices

It’s almost the end of January. Already, upwards of 80% of people have fallen behind or given up on their New Year’s commitment to be better.

Why people fail or succeed is mostly about what they’re willing to do when no one is watching.

New Year’s Resolutions are simply a magnified and accelerated version of how people succeed or fail all of the time.

Truthfully, most people and teams fail to achieve their big stretch goals, at least the first time. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be a stretch. Knowing how to stay in the minority gives you great advantage.

What does the successful minority do differently?

Our Clients Say

I still hear about my work with David Martin, some five years ago. People at my company will say things like, ‘She made huge strides when she worked with David’ or ‘You should have seen how much positive change she accomplished during that time.’ All good things!

Beth Himes
Vice President, Local & Regional Business Service Operations, Aetna

David has become one of my most trusted business advisors. I initially looked to him for guidance in stepping-up my individual performance and leadership but our relationship quickly evolved to where I seek David’s problem-solving skills for the key strategic issues and challenges facing my business. David’s clear thinking helps me sort through the ambiguities that seem to be ever present in today’s tough business climate.

Erik G. Birkerts
CEO, Clean Energy Trust

I am amazed at what I’ve accomplished with David’s help. He has given me the skills and tools to keep me moving forward. More than once, I’ve marveled at his insight and ability to clearly express very complex concepts. I thought coaching was going to be hard, but it was the best thing that happened to me.

Farhad Aghdami
Partner, Williams Mullen

David Martin is brilliant. His style feels so intuitive, like being coached by a hybrid of Phil Jackson and your closest friend. His ability to hone in quickly on what may be blocking success is swift — but what separates him are his creative and easy-to-implement tools. Plus it’s fun to be his client.

Gracia Walker
Director, Business Development, Yum Yum NYC, LLC

David sets very high standards of performance for himself and his clients. He has a very engaging style, listens acutely and devises action steps that are built around current business needs. It’s the results that matter. During the time David spent with me and my team, my region earned the honor of ‘Most Improved’ in our first year, a top third ranking in our second year, and a National Performance Award as the fifth region in the nation in our final year!

Jeff Holland
Regional Vice President, GlaxoSmithKline

David has provided me with sound, mature and measured advice and perspective. He’s extremely skilled at strategic thinking and identifying effective tactical action plans. I highly recommend David Martin.

John A. Schauss
CFO, Media General, Inc.

David played a critical role in developing a strategy for initiating a series of new partnerships, and then helped us launch them by devising tactical plans. He identifies gaps and then works with you to close them, so you can focus on areas that are key to driving success.

Kurt Thearling
Head of Decision Sciences, Vertex Business Services

My time with David was head and shoulders above any coaching experience that I’ve ever had. He developed a deep understanding of my style and situation and provided concrete practices for me to work on that improved my game substantially.
